Little did I know, these seemingly passing remarks held far greater significance.
Decades later, a physician finally ordered an ultrasound, revealing the presence of fatty liver disease otherwise known as MASLD (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease) But the advice offered seemed trivial: lose a few pounds. As a long-time vegetarian committed to staying active, I believed I was leading a healthy lifestyle. However, lurking beneath the surface my previous diagnoses of PCOS, a metabolic disorder was complicating matters further.
Had anyone emphasized the potential gravity of MASLD, I would have acted swiftly to change my life. Unfortunately, the severity of the situation remained undisclosed until I encountered a compassionate gastroenterologist during a visit for indigestion. His probing questions and thorough investigation uncovered the alarming truth: I was facing stage 4 cirrhosis.
It was a sobering realization that a significant portion of my liver was irreversibly scarred, while the remainder teetered on the brink of dysfunction. Without his diligence and insight, the trajectory of my life could have taken a devastating turn.
